In Teresina, Piaui
There is a hotel called "Metropolitan".
On the top of that Hotel is a restaurant overlooking the church from the previous post. It's very beautiful eating your dinner at night on top of a tall hotel. In a hot city, with the wind blowing, it's something very nice. It's so wonderful that you almost forget that the food isn't so great.

Soirree Francaise
The Soirree Francaise was a lot of fun. The french students of my language school thought it would be cool to have a french party with french wines and french foods.
Featured in the picture is colleague Angela Raquel, one of the french teachers. She organized the event.

Day151
I started off experimenting with some tutorials.
And none of them worked on my image like they did in the tutorial.
I also am dying to learn a tutorial of the globe or earth face. Here's a link: Earth Face Photoshop!

Who can drink who under the table?
Day 150.
My first HDR. What a day to get my first one! And still..not that good. I learned that all the cool super HDR's that I've seened are from PhotoMatix..and not CS4. So i'm not willing to pay for photomatix.

and at that moment...
day 143 of 365.
I was speaking to a local photographer - a colleague and friend of mine. We were talking about how sometimes, many times, actually, that photography is more about luck than skill, knowledge, or ability.
This is an example of one of those shots.
I just love how it came out..it communicated so much emotion.

shameless plug ... or desperate photo op?
Day 137 of 365.
It's amazing how good a white tile floor can make a professional looking studio set up for small subjects.
just sayin'
Skechers...Gotta love 'em.
Day 136 of 365.
I love these shoes.
Comfortable, heavy, and solid.
And I also found out with this shot...that I can't take the shot that I imagined without the help of another photographer.

The things these hands have done...
The things these hands have done...
Day 134.
Life is tiring, right? At least 2 times this week, I fell behind in this project. I've read about that, and some people just catch up the following day and everything's cool. So I followed that approach. I fell behind because i"m very busy. Being very busy makes you feel very tired.
My Facebook!
My Twitter!
So, I persevere in this endeavor.
I used a true 2:1 aspect ratio.
F1.8
1/80
Flash bouncing off the nearby wall.
Lightroom for editing.
Photoshop for touch up..and tone burning.
And I used my hand..as a prop. ;)

First Annual Oktobereenfest!
Day 127 of 365.
The language school I work at had a Teacher's event last night. Oktobereen. A mixture of Oktober Fest and Halloween.
Silvia, my model and girlfriend here, went as Little Red Riding Hood. I went as nothing..since the Big Bad wolf outfit couldn't be found in Teresina, Brazil.

Wait! Get a picture of the murdering squad...
Day 124.
Today, at the language school where I work, we began celebrating Halloween.
Everyone, except me, basically was all decked out in their gear. Me, I kinda got chewed for not dressing up.
Tomorrow, I will have a suit on..of somekind. If I have to stay up all night to sew it...then..well..that's not happening.
Ok.
Interesting notes:
The scream mask is probably the biggest thing here next to someone going as a witch or a vampire.
Oh, and one more. YOu can't really tell in the picture. But the middle guy is SUPER tall.
IT's the same guy in this picture here.
Something like from 6'8 to 6'10 but I'm not sure.

a pancake breakfast...
Not much of a picture for the normal viewer.
But this has sentimental value.
I don't cook pancakes a lot in Brazil because I import my own mix from home.
So, another American was talking on facebook about making pancakes...and he didn't have syrup (something they don't sell here in Northeastern brazil)....but I have it.
So i had to top him.
day 121.

It ain't easy learning Portuguese...
Day 120.
My girlfriend lent me her portuguese grammar book, which I love. I love to see new grammar structures in portuguese.
It helps me explain things to my english students better.
This is my first "reading-a-book" shot.
Thursday, October 21, 2010
My animal neighbors...
Day 118
I've been waiting for the opportunity to take a picture of these monkey-like species for more than a year now.
First, let me clarify, they are not in a zoo. They are swinging in the trees of the church across the street.
They are called "Soinho" or "Sagui" in Portuguese, but I have no idea of their scientific name. But I was so fascinated to see them that I just started shooting away. I was not close to them, so the images are very cropped, hence, the lower quality.
I was so happy about this event, that I didn't care about taking a masterpiece today...as if I have many. I just wanted to share some true wildlife from Brazil...not in the zoo.

eleven thousand, one hundred eighty one days
that's the number of days I've lived on day 117 of my project 365.
This turned out a bit andy warhol-ish, but that's okay...
something different for this special day.

Happy Birthday, Maria Carolina
Day 113.
10/16/2010
She is 4 years old now. This picture has two of her birthday gifts. The swimming pool in the back and the donkey that she's holding.
School Birthday Celebration
Maria at her school birthday celebration.
Day 111 of 365.
We had a party for her birthday at the school.
She turned 4 this week.

global power
day 110.
ok, the concept is not exactly as I hoped, and it was a little tougher than I anticipated. So, I tried.
I still kind of liked it tho.
i'm still really late on pictures, but I'm slowly working on them.
another day at TeresinaPlay
day 109
This was the real children's day in Brazil, and I took my daughter out for ice cream, and she wanted to go back to the playground or "arcade"...or whatever you want to call it. She loves air hockey and she's just now turning 4. Maybe she'll be a great athlete some day.
I'm late on posting my pics, but I've been taking them everyday. I have a picture from day 110 that needs to be photoshopped, and the following 2 days. But I've been so busy that I still have to get to edit them and I want to keep them in order. So, I posted this one just to keep activity going.
Monday, October 11, 2010
panoramic bike
day 108.
Was kind of just shooting away and thought of a vertical pano of this bike.
Hope it worked out well..
day at the Amusement park...
day 107.
10/10/10
October 10, 2010 and the world didn't end.
My daughter goes crazy in TeresinaPlay...getting her to leave is like taking her ice cream from her.
She starts to cry..and to make her stop, I have to promise ice cream to her.
Maybe she's not sad, just smart.
bokehgirl
Day 106 of 365.
I feel like I'm losing my ability to be inspired.
Is this a common feeling in these projects? I also feel like I've stopped getting better, and actually may be getting worse.
Friday, October 8, 2010
if only...
day 105.
This was my first photo in a while without my 35mm 1.8. I used my traditional 18-55m that i got with the D60. I really wanted this angle, and I could only pull it off with that lens.
Thursday, October 7, 2010
Me and my buddy...
My daughter and a friend of hers in the school. She always talks about this child and 2 of her other friends.
Day 104.
The rooms are also really awesome in this school. They walls are completely painted in very bright colorful pictures of fairy tales and other stories that the children learn throughout the year.
how to advertise your new business in a south american country
day 103.
If you just started a business in Brazil, one of the best things you can do is parade around the street intersections with your banner, giving out fliers. Can you guess what they do?
Hint: It helps if you speak portuguese.

my current obsession...
day 101.
Instead of really taking pictures today, I'm addicted to Angry Birds.
Wow. This game is addicting.
So, instead of writing a blog entry, I'm going to try and kill some green pigs who've apparently got my eggs.
One Hundred Days!
Day 100.
One-hundred!
One-Flippin'-Hundred!
Now I really feel like I'm heavy into this project, and I gotta finish!
265 days more to go.
It's been a lot of fun so far, very tiring, but I feel like I've really been pushed to be more creative to try new things and look at things differently, all in order to get a different shot.
Well-worth it.

d i a n o v e n t a s e t e (Day 97)
Day 97.
Came home from work. Picked up my daughter, put her to sleep. Still have to prepare some stuff for classes that I teach tomorrow.
Some flash experimentation here.
Nevertheless I can say that what I imagined was NOT what happened, but its not so worrisome, at least I tried.
by the way, I got the shirt from a friend who went to the Bahamas. I, myself, have never been there.
Wednesday, September 29, 2010
Amarelinho...Hopscotch
day 96.
I've taken a picture before of children playing hopscotch at the language school I work at, but never with my 35 mm 1.8
and I ride alone....
Day 95.
Teresina, Brazil
Standing at a roundabout taking pictures of cars passing by.
In the background is one of our two malls which is currently the smallest mall in ALL of Brazil. But have no fear. When the owner heard this, he plans an expansion with a grand opening that featured none other than a Beatles Cover Band. The very same cover band I photographed 2 or 3 weeks before.

day94
I planned a kissing photo today. I think the biggest thing about this 365 is that its very tiring mentally. I found that if I don't start off the day thinking about my general "plan", then I usually try to pull something out of my hat, which is usually a low quality concept.
I liked this and I played with a lot of different backgrounds. After several things that my girlfriend didn't like, I settled on something less flashy, and it gives a more studio fill. The real background is just a plain white wall that exists in my soon-to-be living room.
I guess If I ever buy my own living room furniture, I'll be flat out-of-luck.
I love that space.

Saturday, September 25, 2010
The essence of me.
ok.
This is the new day 92.
I was playing around with the others and I felt out of inspiration, until I opened up this bad boy and began enjoying what was going on with it.
I removed the other, because i knew i could do better.
I didnt realize it would be today, i ran across this other photo which i took while playing around, and I thought I could really get some interesting photoshop work done..
EarGasm
Day 92.
Okay, so call me a medical recommendation badboy. I know what the doctors say. I do it anyway.
There are very few things so satisfying as cleaning out your ears with a Q-tip.
Many have called it Eargasm.
So, that's where we end for day 92.

too big for her britches...
day 90 of 365.
Wow.
that's almost 25% of the way.
The milestone of 100 is coming up.
I'm excited.
This pic here is my daughter wearing my glasses. She looked so much older than she is...
Late night snack
a snack after seeing "Inception"
great movie followed by a mediocre snack...
saving money, on a diet...
just doesn't quite satisfy.
